BENEFITS OF EATING ONIONS

Most of us just eat foods, vegetables, fruits etc. without knowing their health benefit or to even how to garnish our foods with some them in other to a balanced meal. After some research, today I have decided to blog about the health benefit we derived from eating onions.

Onions is a vegetable which has pungent flavors and also known for their medicinal properties.

Onions can vary in size, shape, color and flavor. The most common types are red, yellow and white onion. Flavors can vary from sweet and
juicy with a mild flavor to sharp, spicy, and pungent, often depending on the season in which they are grown and consumed.

BENEFIT OF EATING ONIONS
  • Sleep and mood: Folate, found in onions, may help with depression by preventing an excess of homocysteine from forming in the body, which can prevent blood and other nutrients from reaching the brain. Excess homocysteine interferes with the production of the feel-good hormones, dopamine, and norepinephrine, which regulate not only mood, but also sleep and appetite as well.

  • The phytochemicals in onions improve the working of Vitamin C in the body, thus gifting you with improved immunity.

  • Onions contain chromium, which assists in regulating blood sugar.

  • For centuries, onions have been used to reduce inflammation and heal infections.

  • Slicing raw onions in your food encourages the production of good cholesterol (HDL), thus keeping your heart healthy.

  • A powerful compound called quercetin in onions is known to play a significant role in preventing cancer.

  • Got bitten by a honeybee? Apply onion juice on the area for immediate relief from the pain and burning sensation.

  • Onions scavenge free radicals, thereby reducing your risk of developing gastric ulcers.

  • Those bright green tops of green onions are rich in Vitamin A, so do use them often.

  • Skin and hair: Adequate intake of vitamin C is needed for the building and maintenance of collagen which provide structure to skin and hair.

Adding onion is a great way to add flavor to a dish without adding extra calories, fat or sodium. They are often a staple in many kitchens and pair well with most dishes. They can be sautéed, roasted, grilled or caramelized, be used fresh as a topping for sandwiches or salads and added to salsas and dips.
